The Graphic Designer is a broad classification with three position skill levels. Positions in this classification are responsible for the artistic and graphic design and creation of print and multimedia materials. Incumbents use both design and production elements to organize ideas visually to convey the desired impact and message to the target audience. Incumbents design and create a wide range of materials including, but not limited to printed materials, classroom lectures, exhibits, training sessions, television broadcasts, videos, web sites and public information projects. Work is used both in classroom instruction and to reach a variety of internal and external audiences. In addition to esthetic judgment and project management skills, incumbents provide expertise in the development and evaluation of effective communication strategies and techniques. Under supervision of the Assistant Dean in the College of Extended and Global Education, the Graphic Designer will be responsible for the following: Work independently on a variety of small to medium scale projects, or on a significant portion of a larger project, producing designs and prints using emerging tools to meet the diverse communication needs of the college. Assist with overall artistic direction, strategically integrating the college's graphic communication efforts; provides creative design and layout for brochures, newsletters, posters, flyers, banners, print, web and other forms of advertising; utilizes illustration, photography, typography, and stock art to enhance print material; prepares charts, posters, signage and maps, processes work orders, and accurately logs projects progress and time spent on projects. Lead and direct less experienced staff; consults and communicates effectively with faculty, staff and students, interpreting and translating their needs into effective visual pieces; and tracks and communicates project status with clients through regular meetings, phone, email and a project management database, along with providing feedback to the other designers on their team. Create high-level visual communications, executes and coordinates multimedia or component communication projects and develops graphic identity or templates; troubleshoots, upgrades, and maintains software and hardware systems. Strengthens brand consistency and the overall reputation of the university by following CSUSB's brand and style guidelines; and Perform other related duties as assigned. Applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications: Education and Experience Equivalent to graduation from college or university with a bachelor's degree in graphic design/art, fine arts or related field. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Equivalent to two years of graphic design experience. Experience working in higher education is a plus. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of graphic design and production principles and communication theory including a basic understanding of marketing and promotion concepts. Advanced graphic design skills and artistic ability in order to translate communication needs into an artistic design. Solid working knowledge of applicable graphic design software packages and hardware systems and peripheral (i.e Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign). Thorough knowledge of current campus documents and university-wide publication needs. Thorough knowledge and understanding of design, pre-press, printing and other vendor services to prepare specifications for printing and other services. Knowledge of offset printing and file preparation for print production. Working knowledge of copyright laws applicable to design work and creative properties. Ability and Specialized Skills Use interactive technologies; address communication and visual product goals; create effective, well-organized design pieces understand university level curriculum concepts and convey them graphically. Prepare camera-ready materials; plan, coordinate and direct graphic art communications projects and handle multiple priorities; consult and communicate effectively with faculty, staff and students and to interpret and translate their needs into effective visual formats; work independently. Review the work of others; adhere to deadlines; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships in a diverse and multicultural environment. Detail oriented. Preferred Qualification Experience using Mac computers. Current employees will be given preferred consideration. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
